I decided last summer that I wanted to change out my kitchen before my family came here for Thanksgiving (in October, I live in Canada). I’ve made sure there are no leaks or anything else to drive up my energy bills, and landscaped, but the house still looks like most of it is stuck in the 1970’s.

I didn’t have much time to get this done, since I decided in mid-July that I should do the job, and Thanksgiving was on October 10th this year. I checked around on the internet and found an article about cheap kitchen units, so I decided to take the advice in it. Here is what I did:

First, I went to the big home improvement centers, hoping it was the end of the season so I could get a good deal on some new cabinets. As it turns out that the end of the season, around here is closer to the time I needed the project done by, then it was to the time I was looking. They had some okay deals at a few places, but since I didn’t plan for this renovation for long, I did not have much to spend, only around $3000 for everything.

The next place I checked was the furniture manufacturers. I had hoped to get to them at the end of the season as well, but that is the same time for them as for the home improvement centers, so I was out of luck once again. The deals there were substantially better then buying from the stores they sell too though, since there is no middle man to pay, but it was still not enough, I needed a backsplash and a new countertop to go with the cabinets, luckily I had replaced the old appliances for new steel ones shortly after I had moved in, and I also replaced the old carpet (yes, in a kitchen) with laminate flooring.

The article mentioned that I could get cheap kitchen base units and cheap kitchen wall units by asking other renovators for their old stuff. It also said that it would likely take a while to find someone with a good set, or to find the style I liked. Not hoping for much I took out an ad in out local “Buy and Sell” paper, asking for cheap or free cabinets from people doing kitchen renovations, and started playing the waiting game, while still checking other sources.

I went into work one morning, and my cubicle mate John asked if I had placed an ad for used cabinets. When I told him that I had, he said that his sister and her husband were getting a new kitchen for their house and said he would ask them what they wanted for the old cabinets. John assured me the cabinets were really nice, and went to make a phone call. That night I found myself on a two hour road trip with John after work to go see these cabinets that his sister had.

To my surprise, when we got in the door of their very large home (his sister is married to a lawyer), and went into the kitchen, I saw some incredible cabinets. There were more there then I could ever use in my mediocre sized kitchen, but if the price was right, I could make use of the extras. I took out my tape measure, took a few measurements, and asked the couple how much they wanted for them. Gary, the lawyer, said, “Well I was planning on throwing them away, but if you help me save a few bucks on the contractor, and help me tear them out, they’re yours.” I agreed automatically, and two weekends later I was back there again with my truck and a rental trailer ready to pull down some cabinets and haul them home.

With the money I saved on the cabinets, I had a very nice concrete countertop made, got some nicer tiles for the backsplash then I would have, paint for the walls, and a new kitchen table (which was not part of the original plan). I spent a little over my $3000 budget, but that’s what happens when you buy a $900 kitchen table set because “I just need it.” The best part about it all is that I got to tell my family how much I had spent on the kitchen remodel and they couldn’t believe it, I seemed like a genius right at that moment. Well, it’s either that, or the extra cabinets in the garage that I put up, I would bet they’re the nicest garage cabinets in town.

Cookware Comparison: Copper vs Stainless Steel

There are plenty of cookware options out in the world. Today, let’s see how copper and stainless steel compare against each other…and maybe how they can work together.

Of the two metals, you’re probably going to see Stainless Steel Cookware more often in the kitchen. I am just picturing popping pennies into my mouth as I eat, and that isn’t a nice image.

I’m going to focus on three areas in my comparison: cleaning, cooking, and conducting.

Cleaning

Before I even start, I think we’re all agreed that stainless steel beats copper in cleaning ease. Stainless steel has a chemical make up that is far more resistant to stains, and can handle moderately tough scrubbing. To go back to the pennies, copper tarnishes and oxidizes fairly quickly. Take a look in your change jar and see how many pennies are brown, and how many shine. When copper turns brown it takes an acidic cleaner of some sort and some scrubbing to get it back to a brilliant gleam. Stainless steel generally looks good after washing with soap and water.

Cooking

For the sake of this comparison, by “cooking” I mean “food touching the metal”…so, the cooking surface. I’d go with stainless steel…again, because of the “penny in mouth” factor. When you cook on stainless steel your food is on a metal with a protective barrier. When you cook on copper, especially with acidic foods, the copper is going to leech into the food and give it a not-so-great taste (unless you love tasting pennies). It is rare to find cookware with copper as the cooking surface…but not impossible.

Conducting

Since “cooking” looked at the inside of the cookware, I consider conducting to deal with the outside, or, where the pan meets the heat. This is where copper finally gets a win. You may have noticed that most electrical wiring is made of copper. This is because it is an excellent conductor of electricity. The same can be said of how it deals with heat. When heated, copper spreads the heat quickly and evenly, which is exactly what you want when you’re cooking. Stainless steel is pretty good at transferring heat, just not as good as copper.

Best of Both Worlds

If you want a good example of how these two metals can shake hands, be friends, and live in harmony, take a look at All Clad copper cookware. Their Copper Core line is probably the best combination. The cookware has a stainless steel interior and exterior (easy to clean, good cooking surface), but the inner core is copper (fantastic heat conductor, without being exposed).

Separately, stainless steel wins. But there is no reason the two metals can’t live in peace.

Textured Floor Coating For Your Garage or Outside Stairs

Here we are going to talk about a type of texture painting for your home. We all have those slippery when wet hard to keep clean surfaces around our homes. I will help you kill two birds with one stone with an easy textured floor or surface coating. The most commonly used areas for these coatings are garage floors and outdoor or basement stairs. Use of this type of textured paint technique gives you endless color possibilities and gives any garage a very clean and pristine look while providing a safe no slip surface that can be sprayed clean with a common garden hose.

Step by Step Instructions:

  1. Clean the surface with a pressure washer using water and household bleach. Smaller areas like stairs can be done by hand using rubber gloves and a scrub brush. Make sure any cracks and crevices are cleaned thoroughly with a scrub brush.  Allow surface to dry thoroughly, about 24 hours.
  2. Using 2″ Blue Painters Tape, tape off walls and entryways. Any cracks need to be packed tightly with a good packing foam and caulked with a paint-able caulking.
  3. Once the surface is thoroughly dry you will need a good Epoxy Primer to lay down prior to putting on your textured coating.  Epoxy primer dries faster and provides a very clean and strong base for your coating to adhere to and allows your coating to last longer and not come up or “Fail”. For large jobs such as a garage I suggest using a 5 gallon bucket and a descent quality paint roller with a pole attachment. Mix your 2 part Epoxy Primer and get to rolling. Use a 2″ brush and 2″ roller frame and nap to do the corners and edges. You only have about 30 to 45 minutes before it starts setting up. Primer does not have to be applied heavy the surface just has to look wet.
  4. Once primer is dry you can start applying your coating. If you don’t use an Epoxy garage coating you can use indoor/outdoor enamel paint. Epoxy is always better but outdoor enamel works pretty well too. There are two ways to get the texture in your paint. You can buy it already mixed or you can make your own. To create your own you will use common play sand that can be found at any hardware or home store. Nothing fancy or too fine. Using a 5 gallon bucket, pour your latex or epoxy paint into the bucket and add in the sand and mix thoroughly until you achieve the desired texture. The more sand the more textured it will become, usually 2 parts paint to 1 part sand creates a good finished product.
  5. Begin applying your textured paint, doing the edges with a small roller and brush like you did with the primer using a new 3/4″ roller nap. When you begin rolling with your larger roller, work in 5′ rows working your way across towards your exit point. Be sure to overlap a few inches onto the areas already painted to help blend in the new ares. Apply textured paint in a semi-heavy fashion, don’t be shy and work quickly. Like the primer you only have approximately 30 minutes before the paint starts setting up.
  6. Allow coating to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.

I hope this unique use of textured paint techniques will give your slippery when wet or hard to clean areas of your home a clean new look. These types of improvements are low cost, can be done in a weekend and will definitely raise your home value and make your home more appealing to you, your friends and to any potential buyers.
